Mine clearing in North almost complete

[Submitted on April 29, 2013] Ninety-five percent of the Confirmed Hazarders area has been cleared of mines, according to the National Mine Action Center which was established in the Economic Development Ministry after the war. The remaining confirmed hazard area (CHA) is only 96 square kilometers as at the end of March 2013. Most of this area is covered with shrubs and jungle.

New era for rural schools dawns on May 5

[Submitted on April 28, 2013] Work on developing 6,000 schools selected under Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa’s combined national campaign to develop 5,000 elementary schools and 1,000 secondary schools is now nearing completion and will be ready for use by May 5.

New hotel training centre to meet the tourism boom -Minister Rajapaksa to open Kandy Hotel School on May 15

[Submitted on April 25, 2013] Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa will open the Sri Lanka Tourism and Hotel Management Institute which has been built at Pallekele in Kandy. The institute, equipped with all the modern facilities, is meant to train personnel required for the programme to attract 2.5 million tourists to Sri Lanka by 2016.
