New hotel training centre to meet the tourism boom -Minister Rajapaksa to open Kandy Hotel School on May 15

[Submitted on April 25, 2013] Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa will open the Sri Lanka Tourism and Hotel Management Institute which has been built at Pallekele in Kandy. The institute, equipped with all the modern facilities, is meant to train personnel required for the programme to attract 2.5 million tourists to Sri Lanka by 2016.

Hamilton Canal boosts tourism and community welfare

[Submitted on April 23, 2013] The Hamilton Canal which from which a foul smell was emanating due to polluted water has today become an attractive and environmental friendly water way, thanks to the Hamilton Canal Development project the Economic Development Ministry launched under its tourism promotion programme. This covers a 22-kilometre stretch from Ma Oya to the mouth of the Kelani River.

Issuing of licenses to tourist drivers streamlined

[Submitted on April 22, 2013] Certificates and driving licenses were distributed last week among 250 tourist drivers who were trained by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) under the direction of the Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa.

Econ Ministry revives a near-dead tile industry

[Submitted on April 21, 2013] The tile industry which was on the decline has been revived under Divi Neguma national programme thus opening avenues of employment for over 10,000 people. This follows 156 tile factories resuming operations.
